The big day is here: Dad’s first day with his new caregiver! If your family is similar to many, you may be feeling a variety of emotions: relief, anxiety, and uncertainty, to name a few. These feelings are common and perfectly normal. A little advance preparation and planning for this important milestone will help ensure a comfortable and smooth transition to caregiving for everyone.
One thing to bear in mind is that your JFS Care caregiver is fully trained and experienced in senior care at home. Their primary goal is to enhance life for the older adults they serve. They do not need or expect to be entertained, something that is surprisingly often a worry for care recipients.
What Can You Do to Foster a Smooth Transition to Caregiving?
There are things you can do to make a caregiver feel welcomed in a senior loved one’s home and start the relationship off on the right foot. For instance:
- Give the caregiver a tour of the house, pointing out any specific items such as the cleaning supply closet, medicine cabinet, emergency contact information, etc.
- Do not be concerned about over-explaining details or routines that are important to your loved one. If they like their sandwiches a certain way, always watch a certain game show at 10 am, and enjoy a walk to visit with friends after breakfast, let the caregiver know.
- Keep in mind that your feedback is important – both positive and negative. Contact our office and let us know about anything the caregiver is doing particularly well, or anything you would like to see done in another way. We’re happy when you’re happy! We work tirelessly to make sure each person’s needs are completely met, and that includes incorporating changes when necessary.

They are also carefully matched to each individual in their care based on likes, dislikes, personality type, and more. Each of our team members is someone we would completely trust providing care for our own loved ones. And if for any reason, at any time, you’d like to request a new caregiver, we will honor that request; no questions asked.
